Lake Chelan is a popular recreation destination, and many people visit every year to fish, hike, boat and swim. Unfortunately, these activities can sometimes have a detrimental effect on the local ecosystem. On First Creek, for example, somebody had constructed a makeshift dam in order to form a small swimming hole. This sounds like a great idea on a hot summer day, but it also cut off a significant amount of spawning habitat for Lake Chelan kokanee.
CCFEG went to lake Chelan in March of 2012 to remove this particular barrier, and hopefully we will see kokanee returning to their spawning grounds in the next few years.
